The placement of children aged 12 and under in residential care in Ireland

This report concerns the findings of a national inspection of the placement of children aged 12 years and under in statutory and non-statutory residential care. The inspection was carried out by the Social Services Inspectorate (SSI)1 between October 2006 and January 2007 against criteria 5.1 – 5.172 of the standard on care planning in the National Standards for Children's Residential Centres 2001. The report presents data gathered during the inspection, examines the reasons for the initial and continued placement of these children in residential centres, and makes recommendations to those responsible for the policy and provision of placements for children in care.

Children and Young People's Experiences of Health Information and Quality Authority Inspections

The Irish Association of Young People in Care (IAYPIC) carried out 10 consultation focus group events as requested by the Health Information and Quality Authority. The consultation process was facilitated by the Aftercare Support Network Coordinator and a Children's Rights and Participation Officer in IAYPIC, and took place throughout December 2009.

The Authority has published a follow-up report on recommendations it has previously made for Health Service Executive foster care services. It found that many recommendations are outstanding and should be implemented without delay.

The Report of the Commission to Inquire into Child Abuse, commonly referred to as the Ryan Report (the Ryan Report, hereafter), was published on the 20 May 2009 and the Government accepted the recommendations in full. Subsequently, an implementation plan was published by the Offi ce of the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs (OMCYA) in July 2009 to respond to each recommendation made in the Ryan Report.

A guide to cyberbullying (pdf) has been produced as a joint initiative between the Office for Internet Safety, the National Centre for Technology in Education and Barnardos. The booklet is intended to increase awareness of all aspects of cyberbullying including how to identify it and how to prevent it.
